Rhodes

Leonidas makes its pralines in Belgium. We bring them here and hand them to you, one at a time.

The shop stands between the harbour and the medieval city, on a street you walk down anyway.

From Ghent, in 1913.

The Leonidas story starts in Belgium, with a man from Niğde in Anatolia. The shop in Rhodes is where it arrives.

The man

Leonidas Georges Kestekides

Born in Niğde in Anatolia, in present-day Turkey. The company he founded still carries his name.

27 October 1913

The gold medal at Ghent.

At the Ghent World’s Fair he presented his latest creations to visitors. On 27 October he was awarded the gold medal and a commemorative diploma.

A tea room, and a window.

He opened his first tea room. Together with Joanna he served pastries, confectionery, sweets and ice cream.

He displayed the pralines on the windowsill and sold them straight to passers-by through a sash window. That was the beginning of guillotine-window selling, which would later become the Leonidas trademark.
